- The Rock has discovered AI
- It’s positive for ChatGPT
- The AI gave him a fantastic training program and something else to chew on.
The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) can be forgiven if he’s only now jumping on the fast-moving AI bandwagon. The artificial intelligence revolution, possibly started by ChatGPT in 2022, is not even five years old, and in that time, The Rock has made five films, including big movies like black adam and one redOscar bait The crushing machine, and Disney live action moana redo.
These are the days when stars of film, television and even online videos speak out for or against a technology that may be eating their lunch. In January, SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin called the changes AI has brought to his industry an “existential threat.” Johnson is a member of SAG-AFTRA, and while his superstar status might protect him from AI taking his job, there’s nothing stopping someone from generating unauthorized AI videos of Johnson in action.
Johnson, however, who sat down for a long interview with Esquire Magazineis more than optimistic about AI; He’s kind of a fan.
“I’ve always been an advocate for making big changes; after thinking through them carefully… we can stick our heads in the sand and be afraid, or we can say, ‘Okay, we’re here. Let’s see. Let’s explore,'” Johnson told the magazine.
And exploring has it. The former professional wrestler and noted fitness buff, who is probably known as much for his physique as his charming on-screen personality, installed ChatGPT just a few weeks ago and, as is often the case, started asking him about a training regimen.
For a rookie, Johnson’s ability to craft a useful message was impressive. He said he gave her all kinds of details, like what he ate, how he slept and his goals.
If, like many of us, you’ve been using ChatGPT or another generative chatbot for years, you might not be surprised by the results, but Johnson was impressed by the response. He said the training program was “like it came from ten of the best trainers I’ve ever worked with.” [It was] very specific. “I ended up doing an extraordinary fucking workout,” he told Esquire.
Here at TechRadar, some of us have been using AI to help us improve our exercise routines, and we’ve generally found the same thing: it knows us and can credibly act as a fitness expert.
The Rock in the People’s House?
The interview is worth reading because, after that first prompt and with the Esquire reporter watching, Johnson asked about the possibility of running for president of the United States. This has come up before. I’ve read interviews with him going back almost a decade that asked the same question, but this is the first time Johnson has asked an AI, in this case ChatGPT, about its perspectives. Actually, he was wondering: If he ran, why would people choose to vote for him?
Nothing ChatGPT brought is surprising. It highlights the actor’s likability, who is not a politician, who is not divisive, and his background, which was not always easy (find and stream the now-cancelled TV show young rock yes you can).
The answer, however, seemed to surprise Johnson, and who knows what will come next.
In the end, ChatGPT received an endorsement of sorts from one of the most popular actors in the world, and The Rock may be considering a run for the White House. Not surprising, really, but it might be worth remembering his words about AI in general terms: “We can bury our heads in the sand” or “we can say… let’s explore.” At the very least, you could end up with one of the best workouts of your life.
