People who hoped Henry Ruggs III could be paroled Thursday insisted he has improved as a person, are remorseful for the accident that killed a woman in a car crash in 2021 and are ready to reenter society. It wasn’t good enough for the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners.
The board denied Ruggs’ parole request and he may not be released until 2027, when a mandatory parole date is set.

It’s been nearly five years since Ruggs, a first-round pick in the 2020 draft by the Las Vegas Raiders, drove his sports car at speeds up to 156 mph and crashed into a vehicle driven by Tina Tintor.
Tintor, 23, and his dog, Max, died when their car violently burst into flames.

Prosecutors at the time said Ruggs was legally drunk. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.16, twice the legal limit, in a test taken within the required two hours after the crash.
Ruggs spent the night of Nov. 2, 2021, at Topgolf, a sports entertainment venue in Las Vegas, according to prosecutors.

Ruggs pleaded guilty in May 2023 to felony DUI resulting in death and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. He was sentenced in August 2023 to a prison sentence of three to ten years.

The prison sentence effectively ended Ruggs’ NFL career, although there have been rumors that he would like to try to return when he is eventually released. He would be 28 years old if he leaves before the 2027 NFL season.
Meanwhile, Ruggs completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Alabama, participated in prison work and management programs, including a stint working at the Nevada governor’s mansion under a state inmate work program, and expressed remorse for the incident.

Apparently this was not enough for the Board.
The Associated Press reported that Ruggs will appear again before the parole board three months before his mandatory release on August 24, 2027, according to Kathi Baker, executive director of the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners.
