Mexico beats South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup at home

The first of the 104 World Cup matches was won by the country that hosted the start of the tournament.

Mexico defeated South Africa, 2-0, in Mexico City after the Estadio Azteca hosted the opening ceremony of the World Cup.

Mexico was the best team from the jump, scoring in the ninth minute after having already taken two corner kicks.

Mexico is coming off a disappointing trip to Qatar, as it was the first time since 1978 that it competed in a World Cup and did not reach the round of 16. Apart from his suspension in 1990 and his failure to qualify in 1982, he had survived the group stage in nine consecutive World Cups in which he participated.
