Arsenal defender Ben White is out of World Cup competition after suffering a medial ligament injury.

The Premier League leaders confirmed the injury on Tuesday and said the England international would be out for the rest of the season.

“Our medical team is now managing Ben’s recovery and rehabilitation programme,” Arsenal said in a statement. He said the goal was for White to be ready for the start of his preseason preparations.

This means that White will also miss the upcoming UEFA Champions League final against PSG.

White was injured in the first half of Sunday’s 1-0 win against West Ham.

He returned to the national team in March after an absence of almost four years after leaving the team midway through the last World Cup.

He played friendly matches against Uruguay and Japan and was in the fight to be part of coach Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cups in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

White is one of several high-profile players who suffered injuries ahead of this year’s tournament in June and July.
