Christopher Nolan defended one of the boldest creative decisions in his next epic The odyssey: casting rapper Travis Scott in a supporting role.
talking to Timehe oppenheimer The director explained that Scott’s presence is intended to echo the oral tradition of Homer’s poem.
“I chose it because I wanted to point out the idea that this history has been passed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap,” Nolan said.
Scott appears briefly in promotional images, sharing a banquet scene with Tom Holland’s Telemachus, Robert Pattinson’s Antinous, and Jon Bernthal’s Menelaus.
Although his exact role remains a secret, fans speculate that he could be playing Demodocus, the blind bard who sings tales of Odysseus.
The collaboration marks a reunion.
Scott previously contributed to the track. The Plan to Nolan’s 2020 thriller Principleco-written with composer Ludwig Göransson.
Nolan also addressed online conversations about the film’s costumes, which some critics say stray from historical accuracy.
He responded that the myth of Homer was always interpreted through the lens of later times.
“The oldest depictions of Homeric characters tend to be depicted in the manner of the people who lived in Homer’s time,” he explained.
Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, she added, used materials such as blackened bronze and gold details to signal Agamemnon’s elevated status.
Ultimately, Nolan urged audiences to accept his vision even if they don’t agree with the details.
“Hopefully you enjoy the movie, even if you don’t agree with everything,” he said. “A lot of scientists complained about Interstellar. But you don’t want people to think you took it lightly.”
Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Charlize Theron as Calypso, The odyssey It is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious releases of the summer.
Nolan is clearly prepared to defend every decision behind it.
