- An APK teardown reveals that Gemini for Mac could become an agent assistant
- The tool could control your Mac, just like Claude Cowork and the planned OpenAI super app
- Claude continues to lead the way, with OpenAI silent and Google still not confirming details.
Just weeks after Google launched a dedicated macOS app for Gemini to keep up with competition from OpenAI, the company is now reportedly looking to add even more new agent capabilities as well.
A Gemini-powered ‘computer usage’ agent could be in the works to control parts of your Mac, much like Anthropic’s Claude Cowork feature.
Although the company has not yet indicated such plans, a teardown of the Android Package Kit (APK) by 9to5Google indicates that Gemini could organize files and perform other actions through the Mac app.

Is Google working to make the Gemini app more like Claude Cowork?
The app, which is still in its infancy, primarily serves as a chat interface with an Option + Space shortcut for quick access, in a similar vein to the ChatGPT app. A window sharing feature also allows Gemini to see what’s on the screen for additional context without copy-pasting.
macOS Screen Access and Accessibility permissions would likely grant Gemini access to see what’s on the screen, control the mouse and keyboard, and interact with files directly on the machine. 9to5Google It also implied that links to Google Workspace apps could cause Gemini to convert unstructured files into Docs, Sheets, and Slides files.
Such an app wouldn’t be a big surprise, as Google opened up its Gemini 2.5 Computer Use model to developers last October and rival companies are also experimenting in the same space.
While this would put Gemini at a temporary advantage over ChatGPT, which is still a fairly basic app almost two years after its release, it may not give Google the advantage for long.
OpenAI is said to be working on a super app that brings together the powers of ChatGPT, Atlas, and Codex into a single interface. Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser described the proposed super app as “the core experience where employees get things done,” but no further announcements have been made about the progress of that project.
