Princess Diana’s marriage to then-Prince Charles has long been one of the most scrutinized chapters in modern royal history, and her own words and private memories continue to cast a lasting shadow over that period.
At its milestone 1995 BBC Overview In an interview, Diana hinted at the breakup of her marriage, commenting, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a little crowded.”
The comment was widely understood to be a reference to Charles’s relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Camilla.
Years earlier, tensions allegedly came to a head in an emotionally charged encounter that reportedly took place at a private family gathering.
According to the accounts of royal biographers and the testimony of Diana’s former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, the late Princess of Wales decided to confront the situation head on.
Wharfe recalled that Diana, feeling increasingly isolated at the event hosted by Camilla’s sister, Annabel Elliot, spent some time watching in silence before asking to be taken to where Charles and Camilla were sitting.
He described the moment as unexpectedly tense and said the scene felt “like freezing a moment in time” when she walked into the room.
According to her account, she then turned directly to Camilla and allegedly told her: “Please don’t treat me like an idiot, I know what’s going on.”
The exchange, he said, required great composure on the part of the young princess, who was still navigating the pressures of public life and an increasingly strained marriage.
Reports based on Diana’s recorded reflections for Andrew Morton’s biography Diana: Her True Story suggest that Camilla’s response was direct and personal, referencing Diana’s position, her marriage, and her public image.
Diana, in turn, is said to have responded simply: “I love my husband.”
Wharfe later described the aftermath as deeply emotional, stating that Diana was visibly shaken after the encounter.
Royal commentators have long noted that the period marked a turning point in the breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage, which had already begun to fall apart in the early 1990s.
The couple separated in 1992 and their divorce was finalized in 1996. Diana died the following year in 1997.
Charles and Camilla finally married in 2005.
