Geno Smith’s offseason continues to involve authorities after a traffic stop that occurred in Florida last week.

Smith, who rejoined the New York Jets this year after a stint with the Las Vegas Raiders, was stopped by a Davie Police Department officer on July 6 after being accused of traveling well over the speed limit in a 45 mph zone.

The incident was captured on police body camera, where Smith, driving a 2025 Aston Martin, received a compliment from the traffic stop officer before telling him what he did wrong.

“It’s okay, sir,” the officer was heard telling Smith on the body camera footage. “Beautiful car. Seventy miles an hour, man. That’s too fast for 45.”

Smith was then asked to provide the officer with his license and registration, but he said he had none of that. He also noted that the vehicle was registered to a friend.

“I live right here; my license and everything is in my house,” Smith told the officer.

After writing down Smith’s information, the officer told him to always have his physical identification with him, to which the quarterback responded, “Bad.”

The officer returned to Smith’s vehicle with two tickets, one for not having his license present for the traffic stop and the other for speeding.

This is the third time this offseason that Smith has needed to speak with Davie police officers. In April, he was driving an improperly tagged Rolls Royce, where he and the officer had a big exchange in another body camera moment. Smith ended up telling the officer to “do your job better” even though he was told Smith’s violation was “tag not assigned to the vehicle.”

A more serious conversation with officers came when a woman claimed on Instagram in June that Smith “hit me because he HATES taking care of his son with special needs and can’t be left alone with him because he prefers to watch sex online and play Call of Duty.”

The California Post and ESPN reported that police were called to Smith’s home in Davie, but no arrests were made. The investigation has since been closed and no charges have been filed against Smith in this case, according to multiple reports.

Smith is preparing for his 13th NFL season, but his fifth with the Jets after playing his first four years with the organization that drafted him in the second round out of West Virginia in 2013.

Smith’s first season in New York was a fairly turbulent time, including a demotion after starting his first two seasons and being punched in the face by Jets teammate IK Enemkpali during a locker room altercation in 2015. The hit broke his jaw and required surgery that sidelined Smith for weeks.

Smith has been a different quarterback and person since then, maturing on and off the field when presented with opportunities elsewhere. However, it was with Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks where Smith had a professional revitalization, earning the starting job in 2022 and leading the Seahawks to 9-8 that year to earn his first Pro Bowl nod.

The quarterback spent five years in Seattle before being traded to the Raiders before last season. But after going 2-13 in his 15 starts there, the Raiders sent Smith back to the Jets.
