Matt Damon has opened up about the one “non-negotiable” family rule he strictly follows with his wife, Luciana, and their four daughters as the couple prepare to become empty nesters.

talking to PEOPLE In an interview published Friday, the 55-year-old actor admitted that while the nightly rule was put in place to ensure quality time with his daughters (Alexia, 27, Isabella, 20, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15), it’s not always perfect.
Damon confessed that sometimes external distractions appear and noted that they all have room for improvement when it comes to keeping work off the table.
She recalled a telling moment when one of her daughters pointed out that they hadn’t really talked at dinner the night before.
Damon explained that it made him realize how easy it is to get lost in a daily routine and forget why the tradition was started, calling it a family “mindfulness” lesson that everyone is actively working on.

With the empty nest phase approaching, the couple is doing everything they can to make the most of the time they have left under the same roof.
Damon explained that they’ve been having a lot of open conversations about presence and trying to stay grounded in the moment, noting that since it’s impossible to slow down time, the only real solution is to be truly there and completely immersed in it.
