- Nvidia’s RTX 5000 Super models are in the works and board makers have the chips, according to a new rumor
- However, these graphics cards are ‘on hold’ due to the high price of VRAM
- Super upgrades include a lot of VRAM, so that cost could have an unfortunate impact on MSRPs, and none of this sounds particularly comforting to potential buyers.
Nvidia’s RTX 5000 Super upgrades are apparently in the works, but they’re on hold for now, and the reason makes me even more nervous about the price of these GPUs when (well, if) they finally emerge.
Of course, these RTX Super models are still rumors, although they’re so persistent at this point that they must have at least some validity, and the latest claim comes from VideoCardz.
The tech site apparently spoke to a source at one of Nvidia’s board manufacturing partners, who claims that his company has already received “graphics cards,” which presumably refers to GPU chips (which is what Nvidia supplies, along with VRAM, to its board manufacturing partners).
In any case, although this board maker supposedly has at least some of the necessary chips, Nvidia has told you that RTX 5000 Super updates are now “on hold.”
Because? The delay is apparently due to the price of video RAM, specifically the new 3GB GDDR7 modules that are required (according to previous rumors) for the updated graphics cards.
Compared to the 2GB GDDR7 modules currently used with Nvidia RTX 5000 models, 3GB memory chips are about three times more expensive right now. Oh.
Analysis: Super stumble?
This presents an obvious obstacle because, because these Super variants are equipped with VRAM, the total cost of materials becomes expensive quite quickly.
Remember that rumors believe that the RTX 5080 Super and RTX 5070 Ti Super will have 24 GB of VRAM, and even the RTX 5070 Super will have a hefty 18 GB on board. Gamers will love the latter as an upgrade from the base version’s meager 12GB, but not if it sends the price of the GPU through the roof.
Going by what VideoCardz tells us about US dollar pricing as the market currently stands, in the case of the RTX 5070 Super, the higher amount of RAM and more expensive modules would mean 18GB costs on the order of $360 (maybe a little more), versus $120 for the current RTX 5070’s 12GB load, which is an extra $240 on the price (or the regional equivalent elsewhere).
These graphics cards were already expected to be expensive, but that kind of extra premium added on, this could make them real worriers for your wallet.
The good news for those waiting for new GPUs from Nvidia is that at least these RTX 5000 Super models appear to be available. It’s just that we may have to wait a while yet, although another recent rumor suggested they expire this year. The latest speculation also theorized that an RTX 5060 Super 12GB model was coming, but that didn’t make much sense, and I note that it’s not mentioned in this latest rumor. As always, don’t take the seasoning of all this lightly.
