Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler’s long-awaited Miami Vice reboot now has an official title, director, and release date, and is shaping up to be one of the most exciting blockbusters on the horizon.
The movie will be called Miami Vice ’85Universal has confirmed.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the man behind F1 and Top Gun: Maverick It is scheduled for release on August 6, 2027 and will be filmed for Imax.
Production will begin later this year.
Freshly crowned Best Actor Oscar winner Jordan will play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Oscar nominee Butler plays James “Sonny” Crockett, roles made famous by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson in the classic ’80s television series, and then reimagined by Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in Michael Mann’s 2006 big-screen adaptation.
Kosinski had made it clear that he had both men at the top of his wish list.
“Michael is someone I have admired for a long time, [and] I always wanted to work with him. I think Austin is proving to be someone to watch. Once again, I really admired his choices,” he said Variety when the talks were first reported last year.
“If it ends up being those two, I’d be very lucky.”
Both actors come to the project in exceptional form.
Jordan took home the Academy Award, a SAG-AFTRA Award, and two NAACP Awards for his double performance in Ryan Coogler. sinnersand is also directing and starring in a reinvention of The Thomas Crown Affair.
Butler, whose portrayal of Elvis Presley earned him an Oscar nomination and launched him into Hollywood’s top tier, has since worked with Denis Villeneuve, Jeff Nichols, Darren Aronofsky and Ari Aster, and will soon appear in a crime thriller. enemies with Jeremy Allen White.
The film’s tagline promises a dive into “the glamor and corruption of mid-’80s Miami,” drawing inspiration from the pilot episode and first season of the original series.
The screenplay was written by Dan Gilroy, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich.
