Legendary New York Yankees radio announcer John Sterling died at age 87 on Monday, and captain Aaron Judge wants Sterling’s calls to live forever in the Bronx.

After the Yankees recorded the end of their dominant 12-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium on Monday, the same call with which Sterling ended every Yankee victory blared over the stadium speakers.

“Game’s over! The Yankees win! You, the Yankees win!”

Sterling’s decision was heard before Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” engulfed the Yankee Stadium crowd. Judge said he looks forward to hearing from Sterling after every home win.

“I think it would be good advice for John and what he meant, both to this franchise and this fan base. I think it would be great,” Judge said.

Judge hit his major league-leading 14th home run in the first inning to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead, and the 34-year-old said he thought about Sterling as he rounded the bases.

“Seeing that tribute definitely impacted him because he loved the Yankees,” Judge said. “I loved this team. I loved this franchise. I loved the fans. I loved everyone I talked to every night. So doing that in the first inning was like chuckling on the bases thinking about what I was probably saying.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone echoed Judge’s sentiment and hopes Sterling’s decision becomes part of the Yankees’ post-win lore.

“Yes, I would love to,” Boone said. “Right towards Frank.”

Boone said before the game that he’s been paying tribute to Sterling in the dugout for a couple of years by shouting “Game over! The Yankees win! You, the Yankees win!” before starting the handshakes.

He was happy that Sterling’s voice had taken away his own after Monday’s victory.

“Happily, that choked me up a little bit,” Boone said.

Sterling began broadcasting games in 1989, starting a streak that lasted more than 5,000 games. He began a reduced schedule in 2022 and retired in April 2024 before retiring later in the season to broadcast the team’s postseason games. He then officially retired after the Yankees reached the World Series.

He suffered a heart attack in January and was said to be in good spirits.

The AL-leading Yankees (24-11) play the Texas Rangers (16-18) at home on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. ET, and Judge and Boone hope to win and hear Sterling’s voice as they celebrate a victory.
