US President Donald Trump criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s recent executive order to introduce a year-long statewide ban on hyperscale data centers, urging the state to change its stance “immediately.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump characterized data centers as “money-making machines” that create taxes and jobs comparable to “liquid gold,” implying that they are not only crucial to cloud computing and artificial intelligence, but also to the country’s economy.
Although states like “Alabama, Florida, Texas, Arizona” and others could now see more projects relocated amid ongoing moratoriums, Trump is concerned about the implications of this “terrible decision.”
Trump responds to New York state moratorium
The executive order, signed by Governor Hochul on July 14, 2026, makes New York the first US state to impose a statewide moratorium on new data centers, in this case, those requiring more than 50 MW of power.
Despite growing local opposition to building data centers across the United States and, indeed, the world, Trump maintains that they are “tremendous victories for the states and communities that are lucky enough to get them,” as they create jobs and are responsible for “their own water and energy.”
It is important to note that the one-year ban for New York State is exactly that: a temporary ban designed to give the state enough time to consider environmental and social impacts and rewrite legislation and guidelines accordingly.
Urging Governor Hochul to “change his policy immediately,” Trump argues that ongoing moratoriums like these could cause the United States to lose to “China and other countries” in what is becoming a global AI race.
