In addition to launching the new screenless Google Fitbit Air, arguably one of the best fitness trackers of 2026, Google also completely revamped the Fitbit app, transforming it into a new entity called Google Health.
The Premium version is now a complete AI health coach, capable of using all the information collected through the free version of the app and giving you workout plan suggestions, recipe tips, photo-based nutritional tracking, and much more. While the trainer looks impressive at first glance, this huge, all-encompassing health advisor means that some features that Fitbit fans loved are being removed.
Chief among them are the dream animals. The ‘old Fitbit’ used information about your sleep to assign you an animal profile, such as a sleepy lion or a nocturnal hedgehog, and these were re-evaluated monthly. Badges, another common fitness gamification element in the best fitness apps, are also going away.
Instead, Google says, “if you have Google Health Coach, your coach will help you celebrate your progress and achievements.” The removal of this feature for free users is indicative of Google pushing users towards its premium AI subscription service.
Fans are understandably a little unhappy about this. In a thread on the Fitbit subreddit, users lament the loss of their favorite features, with one saying, “Why is technology becoming less and less fun?”
However, long-time Fitbit users are used to this type of loss. Since Google acquired the brand in 2021, community features were slowly phased out while data collection was improved, and resources were likely funneled into the Google Pixel Watch series, while existing Fitbit users felt abandoned.
However, I want to hear what you think, especially if you’re a long-time Fitbit user. Do you love the idea of the new agent AI trainer with its holistic approach to health and wellness, or do you wish Google would just leave its tracker alone?
The changes will be implemented for all users starting May 19. Vote in the poll below, comment on this article, or you can even email me at [email protected] and I’ll post your responses in a follow-up article next week.
