Poised to become the world’s most prominent “network of real humans,” the project formerly known as Worldcoin aims to establish an identity layer to distinguish unique individuals from automated robots. The protocol relies on custom hardware, known as Orb, to issue credentials without compromising user privacy.
“Global technology and proof of human variations are among the most important components to securing and verifying interactions in an increasingly digitally driven world,” Tom Lee, a member of the board of directors at Eightco Holdings who also serves as chairman of Bitmine, said in a statement.
World said the investment comes as it moves from building the network to expanding utility.
To date, more than 39 million people have joined the World Wide Web, with more than 18 million humans verified by an Orb, World said in the funding announcement press release. The network has used more than 475 million World ID tests since its launch, expanding its capacity alongside the rollout of its updated, enterprise-ready infrastructure, it added.
World, the digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, in April unveiled what it called its most significant update yet to World ID, positioning the system as a “complete human-proof” infrastructure aimed at consumers, businesses and AI agents.
